Richard gained a BA (Hons) in Pure and Applied Biology from Keble College, Oxford in 1988, studying diverse topics such as forestry and soil science. He spent 10 years as a management consultant at the renowned, global firm Accenture (Andersen Consulting), before spending 5 years as an Executive Director (Operations) at UBS Investment Bank. He ran his own project management consultancy for 5 years, before seeking a career change that focussed on his love of nature.
He spent two years at Gloucester University (2008-10) completing a conversion course and Post Graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture, gaining a distinction and winning an award. He majored on the planning and urban design modules. After graduation, he spent 4 years as a landscape designer at Portus and Whitton in the Cotswolds. He worked on projects from inception to handover, covering a range of scales from private gardens to the design of care villages. He also participated in the redesign of the historic marketplace in Cirencester. He became a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute (CMLI) in 2012.
Richard now leads multi-disciplinary design projects for EDP, delivering environmentally-led solutions for clients (typically land agents, planners, national developers and private landowners). His in-house teams include ecologists, landscape architects, heritage consultants and arboriculturalists, but he works daily with external civil engineers and highways consultants to design coherent and pragmatic solutions.
He has masterplanned several small village extensions in sensitive locations, as well as large sites that will deliver up to 600 dwellings. In all cases, the sites tend to have very challenging environmental and planning constraints. As well as leading teams, his primary deliverables are ‘Vision’ or promotion documents, Design and Access Statements (DAS), and 1:500 scale Illustrative Site layouts.
Richard is also an experienced practitioner in Green Infrastructure (GI) and has led the GI strategies for several new garden towns/urban extensions, including:
• North West Cardiff - ‘Plasdwr’, 360 ha with early phases being built out;
• Aylesbury Woodlands, 200ha with outline consent subject to S106; and
• Sharpness Growth Point, 100 ha with a draft allocation.
