Jaimie Ferguson

Jaimie is an experienced and creative designer, whose design skills cover everything from city-wide spatial and regeneration strategies through to site-specific masterplans. He regularly leads multi-disciplinary design teams working with clients and collaborators to shape and deliver major developments. His experience is drawn from projects at all scales across the UK, as well as the far east, middle east and Russia.

Jaimie studied engineering and architecture at the University of Manchester, before quickly specialising in urban design and masterplanning, completing an MA at the University of Westminster. He started his career working with some of the leading proponents of Urban Design at Alan Baxter & Associates and EDAW, where he was ultimately made a Director.  He then moved on to take a similar role with BDP before becoming the national Head of Design at Turley.

He is now one of the Directors of the independent design studio OPEN where he established and leads the Manchester studio. He has lived, studied and worked in the city for over 20 years and has played a role in bringing forward some major development and regeneration projects in the city and wider region. Examples include regeneration frameworks for key growth areas such as Ancoats and the Northern Gateway alongside diverse projects such as the upgrade and expansion of Chester Zoo and the Etihad Campus, Manchester City’s training complex, and the associated community facilities.

Passionate about urban regeneration Jaimie enjoys overcoming the physical and perceptual challenges that are required to bring forward development in brownfield locations and regularly advises Local Authorities regarding the potential of town centres. He is also a strong exponent of sensitive and well structured urban growth having worked on a number of of major new settlements and urban extensions such as the 4,000 home Coed D’Arcy for BP and the Prince’s Foundation, Lawley Village in Telford, proposals for a 2,500 home urban extension in Greater Manchester and most recently the 1,500 home development of East Halewood in Merseyside.

Jaimie has been a guest lecturer and tutor at the University of Manchester and Manchester School of Architecture. He sits on the PlacesMatter! design review panel for North West England and has a strong track record for design guidance and assessment; from national documents for CABE through to local development briefs and design guides.
