Whitehill & Bordon Green Town, Hampshire
AMEC are providing integrated design, transport, environmental and engineering inputs to support a Hybrid Planning Application (HPA) on behalf of the landowner Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) for the re-development of Bordon Garrison at Whitehill & Bordon, Hampshire.
The development utilises around 200 hectares of surplus military barracks and training land owned by the MoD in the west of the town. This provides a major opportunity to grow the town in a sustainable way which addresses the job losses associated with the military closure and re-balances the town for a successful long term future.
Extensive baseline work has been undertaken by AMEC across a range of disciplines. This included an appraisal of extensive work previously undertaken by a team funded by the UK government Eco-Towns initiative. This baseline information informed the masterplan proposals, which have subsequently been further developed following extensive stakeholder and public consultation.
The current proposals celebrate the unique woodland landscape setting of the town and create a framework for the delivery of up to 2,400 dwellings, 10,000 m² employment floorspace, a new mixed-use town centre including a new central town square; the conversion of two historic buildings; a care/nursing home; an energy centre; a foodstore and a mix of commercial floorspace.
A proposed network of high quality public open space is focused around provision of a significant new 60ha country park (providing Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace) and also includes sports pitches, informal/incidental open space, children’s play areas including multi-use games areas (MUGA) and allotments.
