South Maldon Garden Suburb, Essex

Broadway Malyan was appointed by Commercial Estate Group to masterplan a new Garden Suburb of 1,500 new homes to the south of the Essex coastal town of Maldon.

Like many areas within the country Maldon is under pressure to deliver new housing and the Council allocated two new Garden Suburbs to the north and south of the town.  Broadway Malyan helped to secure the site in the emerging Local Plan through a strong visioning and concept exercise and was then appointed by CEG and adjacent landowners Dartmouth Park Estates to work with the Council in preparing a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) for the Garden Suburb.  This SPD, which has been endorsed by the Council, examined the local context, set out a strong vision and provided a masterplan and set of development principles - based on the best design principles of Garden Cities and Suburbs - to guide future development.  It also set out the requirements for future planning applications.

Following this, Broadway Malyan then progressed a planning application for the CEG element of the site, which comprised 1,000 homes, a primary school, a local centre, an area of employment and new formal and informal open space.  The Design and Access Statement, prepared by Broadway Malyan, provides more detail in terms of character and design which will help ensure that the South Maldon Garden Suburb will become a sustainable, high quality and attractive place in which to live and work.
