Galgorm Castle and urban Demense, Ballymena, Co.Antrim

GM Design Associates was commissioned to devise a Master-plan and concept designs that would restore the Galgorm Estate with a wide range of viable enterprises and uses, consistent with its historic character. The condition of Galgorm Castle, an A-listed building had deteriorated and many heritage assets including historic buildings, monuments and wildlife habitats of the Demesne were in long term decline. The concept promoted new leisure and tourism uses, availing of the Demense’s located at the urban edge of the large regional town of Ballymena. We plan identified appropriate development opportunities and included improved public access to the Estate and Rivers Maine and Baird. We assessed the existing castle, prepared a comprehensive master-plan and negotiated planning permission for the conversion of the former walled garden to a garden centre, the restoration of Galgorm Castle, reinstatement of two other listed buildings within the demesne, new business units replacing derelict farm buildings, renovation of the Galgorm Golf Club and restoration of the demesne habitats.
