Doctor Foster went to Gloucester in a shower of rain. He stepped in a puddle right up to his middle and never went there again.
If people don't like a place, they might never go back, like the Doctor.
Urban Design is all about the place, the spaces between the build- ings. To enjoy a place or space it should be fun, beautiful, interesting, safe, exciting, worth exploring, calm, frenetic, varied, homogeneous. Good design should make the most of the opportunities available and aim to be more than the sum of the parts. It should respect the elements that exist and make the most of orientation, light, massing, sculpture, scale, focal points, views. It should provide significant link- ages and connectivity for pedestrians (and vehicles) and celebrate the spaces between things as much as, if not more than, the things themselves. It should stimulate activity, delight, theatre.
Urban areas serve many functions. They provide places for people to live, work, play, walk, run, sit and meet people. They reflect the history of a space and can contribute positively to the future by making sustainable places where people can function, without the need to travel far afield.
Urban Innovations enjoys exploring the dynamics of Urban Design. We look for creative, cunning and interesting solutions which not only provide exciting spaces for people to enjoy, but also maximise the potential of the place so that developers benefit as well. The Company, established in 2001, has the skills to take a broad over- view of the development process from beginning to end.
We have completed a number of high profile commissions where the complexity of the project has required lateral thinking and a thorough understanding of urban design principles. Our ex- perience ranges from large commercial and leisure mixed use devel- opments to inner city housing, regeneration and the development of brownfield sites, also for mixed uses. We work for large private clients, Local Authorities and Community Groups.
Our successes rely on our creative flair mixed with pragmatic and extensive experience of the complexities of construction.
We are therefore equipped and keen to avoid Dr. Foster's puddles.
