From January 2015, AECOM and URS have come together under the AECOM banner. We are a fully integrated infrastructure firm with a project life-cycle offering that brings together architects, engineers, designers, scientists and management and construction consultants. Today, we are one of the largest and most dynamic built environment practices in the UK. Urban design is a core component of our offer to clients in both the private and public sectors, both up and down the country and across the world.
AECOM’s urban designers often work in concert with colleagues in other disciplines to improve upon traditional practice and create more vibrant and successful places. We can easily call on our in-house expertise in community engagement, socio-economic analysis, funding and delivery, architecture, landscape architecture, town planning, transport, infrastructure and cost consultancy. This enables us to make connections across the many layers of a site – from the structural to the ecological, economic or social – which in the end inform a better, more robust urbanism.
We have been at the forefront of developing best practice policy and design approaches for over 20 years, blending strategic thinking with an in-depth understanding of delivery. Seeing the bigger picture enables us to challenge preconceptions and shape design proposals and strategies that are both progressive and deliverable. Understanding what makes places work helps us to create policy frameworks and design solutions that enable the delivery of successful and sustainable towns and cities.
The team has unparalleled experience in delivery, where we take the principles and policy that we have helped to frame and apply them to create best practice exemplars of place-making. Our range of work covers all sectors with a particular emphasis, in the UK, on residential led-masterplanning, which is complemented by our established international reputation built through some of the world’s most high profile urban projects.
We have a particularly strong track record in:
- creating new residential communities in urban extensions and
- new settlements neighbourhood planning and working with communities to regenerate and improve the quality of where they live
- planning and designing to mitigate and adapt to climate change providing social infrastructure within new and existing
- communities planning for global events and complex regeneration led by
- public investment in sports, leisure and culture
- developing regeneration strategies for town and district centres master planning new and improved industrial and business districts
- producing design guidance and codes assessing the design impacts of major development, including infrastructure.
Our portfolio of UK projects currently includes masterplans for new communities and urban extensions, industrial and office campuses for blue-chip companies and universities, the creation of new mixed use neighbourhoods adjacent to the River Thames in London and a variety of masterplanning and urban interventions within the wider regeneration of East London, beginning with the original masterplan that secured London’s appointment for the 2012 Olympic Games. We are also working to support the production of a number of neighbourhood plans and are key players in the revival of interest in garden cities and suburbs.
The UK is the global centre of excellence for urban design at AECOM, and we work overseas especially in emerging economies. Projects of note include Mshiereb Heart of Doha, the Olympic Park and Village for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Singapore Sports Hub, and a number of large-scale, though fine grain, plans for cities in transition, such as Jeddah and Abu Dhabi.
